A record sum was revealed on 19 January at the closing ceremony of “Operation Santa Claus 2015”. The annual fundraising campaign is co-organised by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) and South China Morning Post (SCMP). This year’s campaign, held over the last two months and themed as “Small Change, Big Change”, showed the continuing and remarkable warmth and concern of the public towards those in need. A new fundraising record of HK$21,302,162 – the best total yet in the 28-year history of Operation Santa Claus – was revealed at The AIA Great European Carnival by the guests of honour, LAM Woon-kwong, Convenor of the Non-Official Members of the Executive Council and Clifford HART, Consul General of the United States of America to Hong Kong and Macau, together with the officiating guests, LEUNG Ka-wing, Director of Broadcasting and Robin HU, Chief Executive Officer, SCMP Group, and representatives of donors and beneficiaries.
Among all donors who made this year an enormous success, some outstanding supporters received awards during the ceremony. Discovery Mind Kindergarten again received “Top School Fundraiser Award” for raising HK$135K by completing a charity walkathon. UBS AG raised more than HK$4.2M to become the “Top Corporate Fundraiser” again this year. Yuen Long Public Secondary School, with an amount of HK$13,400 raised, was presented with the “Most Creative School Fundraiser” for its charity activity – Food Festival where teachers, students and Parent-Teacher Association members cooked a feast in the playground, followed by a singing marathon on the next day with students singing English songs. The “Most Creative Fundraiser Award” went to Kowloon Shangri-la Hong Kong, which organised the “Jimmy Choo shoe design event”, raising an amount of nearly HK$108K.
