MBB2012: No puede ser (It cannot be)


Winner of the Zarzuela Prize of Plácido Domingo’s Operalia World Opera Competition and finalist in the San Francisco Opera Merola auditions, this Spanish tenor has already made his mark in opera and concert performance. He received his training at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofia.Protégé of the great Alfredo Kraus, Gabaldón studied with the maestro until his death.

Aurelio Gabaldon may have performed a repertoire made up entirely of Zarzuela for his 2007 Studio One recital, but he is one of the few tenors who can sing the famous La fille du regiment scene by Donizetti with 9 high Cs and this young and exciting artist will perform this season in La Fille du Régiment with Taconic Opera.

He was recently heard as Ernesto in Don Pasquale with Taconic Opera; in the title role in Werther with Opera Showcase in New York City; and as leading tenor with Miami Lyric Opera - Nemorino in L’Elisir d’Amore, Arturo in I Puritani and Jorge in Marina. In his own native country of Spain, he has portrayed Arturo in I Puritani (concert version) with Gran Teatro del Liceo in Barcelona; Ernesto in Don Pasquale with Teatro del Bosque in Madrid and Teatro Romea in Murcia; and Nemorino in L’Elisir d’Amore with Teatro Baracaldo and Teatro Arriaga, in Bilbao. He is a seasoned oratorio soloist and recitalist and will be talking about his opera roles and love of Zarzuela.

In 2007 he was accompanied by Yolanda Vidal.

The Music Beyond Borders @ 10 Anniversary Concerts are coming soon with a big change in venue - outdoors at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Piazza C (as part of the New Vision Arts Festival 2012). The concerts will take place on 3 Nov (Saturday) and 4 November (Sunday) from 2:30pm to 6pm. Two past Music Beyond Borders artists return: Award winning Dutch saxophonist Yuri Honing, this time with his Wired Paradise band and, Austria’s Georg Gratzer and Beefolk, who gained quite a following on their last visit here. To mark the start of another 10 years of Music Beyond Borders to come, will be the Claude Diallo Situation from Switzerland, taking part in the project for the first time.
