On Friday's Backchat, documentaries - and helicopters on Mars.
DAB lawmaker Holden Chow has warned that the pro-democracy Confederation of Trade Unions could be violating the national security law with its private screenings of three documentaries on the social unrest of 2019. He said the group could be seen as "promoting terrorism"
The screening of the documentary about the events in the PolyU during the 2019 protest had been postponed after officers from the Office for Film Newspaper and Article Administration visited the venue asking for screening details. The CTU said they claimed that they have the right to send someone to the screening, and to monitor if the CTU have the screening permit and to check the participants' ID cards.
The film is allowed to be screened here although it has to also show a warning that some of the acts depicted “might constitute criminal offences”. Earlier this year, extensive attacks by several pro-Beijing media outlets spurred a cinema and some arts centres to scrap screenings of the film.
Other documentaries are in the news too, with a Norwegian film - the Oscar Nominated ‘Do Not Split’ being slammed by China state media. They said it should not win the award as it lacks artistry and is full of biased political stances.
They warned the Oscars should not be reduced to political tools; otherwise, it will hurt Chinese audiences' feelings and may lead to a heavy loss in the Chinese film market.
The Oscars themselves will not be aired live on TV here.
Should documentary films be balanced? Accurate? Should they be impartial, or partial? Does that make them propaganda? How are they different to news reports? Do some promote terrorism?
