Habits and Haberdashery

2022-08-13

In 2019, some contractors working at the Maryknoll Convent removed a false ceiling and found the door to an attic. In it was a treasure trove of 3000 orders for vestments, embroidery, threads on bobbins, parts of Singer sewing machines – all part of an industrial sewing workshop for young underprivileged women set up by the Maryknoll Sisters which ran at the convent from 1949 for three decades.  Seventy pieces from that attic discovery were on show at an exhibition at the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre in Kowloon Park called Habits and Haberdashery Uncovering History and Heritage in the Hidden Attic – it was on show until September 14.  Doris Kwan, the conservation and exhibition project co-ordinator of the Maryknoll Convent School Foundation Ringo Ng an assistant curator for monument buildings with the Antiquities and Monuments Office.
