Plans to import more non-local care home workers / Safety around schools

2024-07-09
On Tuesday's Backchat, we're talking about proposals to import more care home workers.

The government has suggested increasing the quota by 8,000 to 15,000 within the next three years, citing an ageing population and a labour shortage.

If approved, the plan would see the non-local workers arriving in batches, with an extra 3,000 in the first year, another 3,000 in the second year, and 2,000 more in the third year.

This gradual approach is designed to prioritise the employment of local staff, but unions are worried that it could open a "Pandora's Box" and have an impact the territory's local workforce if expanded further.

After 9:45, we'll talk discuss calls to install more CCTV cameras near schools following a kidnapping case.
