New tobacco control measures on the pipeline / Resignation of foreign judges

2024-06-13

On Thursday's Backchat, we're talking about tobacco control.

Health authorities are proposing to implement 10 new tobacco control measures, which would include a ban on e-cigarette possession, flavoured cigarettes and as well as forbid members of the public from smoking while queuing.

The planned move could also see branding logos removed from cigarette packs and fines for smoking in smoke-free areas doubled to HK$3,000.

Tobacco control advocates have welcomed the action plan, hoping to go a step further and eventually outlaw flavoured shisha too, citing their attractiveness among young people and women.

Retail sector representatives have argued that new restrictions on flavoured products could impact Hong Kong's attractiveness to visitors, whilst restaurants and nightlife establishments could suffer as well — a claim refuted by Health Secretary Lo Chung-mau.

What do you think of these new measures?

After 9:45, we'll be talking about the recent resignation of foreign judges.
