When career foreign office diplomat Sir Edward Youde became Hong Kong governor in May 1982, he had already done four tours in China, including as British ambassador in Beijing, where he tried to negotiate the release of HMS Amethyst. A great deal of his time as governor was tasked with liaising between London and Beijing on the future of Hong Kong. Youde died in Beijing of heart failure in 1986, the only governor to die “in harness”. Author Mark O’Neill was working in Beijing at the time of his death and talks about Youde’s life.
