Plastic waste accounts for approximately 21% of all municipal solid waste disposed in landfills in Hong Kong.
In light of this, the Environmental and Ecology Bureau submitted the Product Eco-responsibility Amendment Bill 2023 to the Legislative Council. It proposed that phase one of the regulations on disposable plastics, which was scheduled to be implemented in 2025, be implemented as early as the fourth quarter of 2023.
