On Friday's Backchat: copyright law; and Black Friday sales.
The government has revived a plan to reform the copyright law, five years after it was withdrawn amid filibustering in the legislature and opposition from some concern groups.
Officials on Wednesday launched a three-month public consultation on a proposal to update the
Copyright Ordinance, which is expected to be submitted to the newly elected Legislative Council next year. Under the plan, several types of work will be exempt, including parody, satire, caricatures and commentary on current events, but no clear definition has been included for now.
The Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Edward Yau, said the proposals don’t
include elements covering national security, but he doesn’t know what kind of suggestions will be made during the consultation exercise.
What do you think? How should a balance be struck between the rights of copyright users and
owners?
From 9:15am, we’re talking about Black Friday sales. What will it tell us about the health of the
economy?
