In the first half of Monday’s Backchat, we’re talking about the conviction of former US President Donald Trump.

A New York jury found the former leader and Republican candidate guilty on all 34 counts of tampering business records and concealing payments made to silence adult film actress Stormy Daniels. This also marks the first time ever that a former US President is convicted of a crime.


Sentencing is expected in July and the business magnate turned politician could face up to four years in prison or receive probation. Mr Trump — who called the verdict “rigged” and the judge “corrupt” — will appeal.


Will this conviction shape voters’ perception? Has Trump lost his right to vote? And can he still be elected as president? We’ll speak to a former US judge and prosecutor to find out.
