HK's electoral changes

2021-03-31
On Wednesday's Backchat, HK's electoral changes.
The National People's Congress Standing Committee has approved amendments to annexes 1 and 2 of the Basic Law to pave the way for drastic changes to the electoral system.
Under Beijing’s plan, the election committee that selects the chief executive will be expanded from 1,200 members to 1,500, and will be given new powers to nominate and select some lawmakers.
National security police officers are to run background checks on would-be election candidates to determine how patriotic they are, with securing the force's approval one of several new hurdles for those hoping to run for office.
In the same afternoon, Legco president Andrew Leung announced that the next Legco elections will take place in December, and that current lawmakers will stay on in the council until then.
What do you think of the new system?
