Boycotts, sanctions; Stuck in the Suez

2021-03-29
On Monday's Backchat, boycotts, sanctions; and stuck in the Suez.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has criticised several international brands including Nike, H&M and Adidas over their decision to boycott Xinjiang cotton. These brands said they would stop buying cotton from Xinjiang because they alleged the cotton were produced by forced labour in the region.
Some mainland consumers have expressed anger and said they would boycott brands which boycott Xinjiang cottons. The sentiments escalated and celebrities who were spokesperson of these brands also issued statements to cut ties with their sponsors.

And China has sanctioned organisations and individuals in the UK over what it called "lies and disinformation" about Xinjiang, days after Britain imposed sanctions for alleged human rights abuses in the northwestern Chinese region.
What do you make of these boycotts and sanctions? Are they effective? Will the boycotts last? Is politics becoming too pervasive?
