HK Art; Sai Kung Cattle

2021-03-23
On Tuesday's Backchat, art censorship and Sai Kung cattle.

Pro-Beijing lawmaker Eunice Yung has raised concern regarding an art piece by Ai Weiwei which may be displayed in the upcoming M+ museum in West Kowloon Cultural District.
Yung asked Chief Executive Carrie Lam whether she would assign any departments to vet museum exhibitions to make sure they are in line with national security and the Basic Law.
Lam replied that the authorities are on 'full alert' to make sure museum exhibitions don't undermine national security.

And an oil painting that shows Mao Zedong looking at a urinal is the latest artwork to attract criticism. The painting by Beijing-based artist Shi Xinning depicts Mao looking at a urinal sculpture by French artist Marcel Duchamp.
The painting, another work from the Sigg collection,  faced criticism from state-owned Ta Kung Pao media for "uglifying and defaming the country's leader."
The Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC) said it may cancel grants made to artists who advocate Hong Kong independence, after a state-run newspaper accused the statutory body of handing out millions of dollars to ‘yellow’ filmmakers who make movies glorifying what it described as ‘black violence’.
Is the arts scene the next venue for reinforcing Beijing's  'comprehensive jurisdiction' ? Is it censorship? Can M+ comply with the NSL and show contemporary art freely? Can artists like Ai challenge authority with impunity?
From 9:15am-9:30am, we'll be talking about stray cattle in Sai Kung.
