75th anniversary of the end of the war in Hong Kong

2020-08-15

Ronald Taylor, chairman of the Royal Hong Kong Regiment, The Volunteers Association tells me about the republication of Major Evan Stuart’s December 1941 Hong Kong Volunteers In Battle when Stuart ran the Volunteers’ 3 Company; and of Arthur May,  who took a hidden Union Jack flag and after the Japanese surrender hoisted it on the Peak. In August 1945, Les Bird came to Hong Kong with the Royal Navy tasked with “mopping up” pockets of Japanese military resistance and also stopping looters, as Admiral Harcourt’s fleet arrived. His son, former Marine Police commander Les Bird, talks about his parents’ actions during the Second World War.
