Hong Kong by Dawn, Beijing by Dusk

2019-06-21
In this episode, we will travel northwards along the Beijing-Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong High-Speed Railway, departing from Hong Kong and passing through Wuhan and Zhengzhou to arrive in Beijing. The journey is 2,440 kilometres long and takes about nine hours. If one departs from Hong Kong in the morning, one will arrive in Beijing before dusk.

Historians have been searching for the actual site of the Battle of Chibi (Red Cliffs) since it took place 1,800 years ago, but its precise location remains elusive to this very day. Where could it possibly be?

Cave dwellings have been the main form of shelter in the loess-covered region of North China for more than a thousand years. In Baishe Village of Sanyuan County, more than 200 of these secret underground dwellings have been preserved to the present day.

Zongren (bristle dolls) were toys in the Qing court which eventually spread amongst commoners. Bai Dacheng is the inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of bristle doll making in Beijing. He is also the sole remaining craftsman who has mastered all aspects of this art form.

Zhonglou (Bell Tower) and Gulou (Drum Tower) stand as symbols of ancient imperial power in Beijing. By sounding the bell at dawn and the drums at dusk, the emperor controlled the time and daily routines of his subjects.

Erkui (Two Strong Men) wrestling is a Manchurian custom, the skills of which used to be only passed down to males. Nonetheless, a group of rural women took it upon themselves to learn it, eventually becoming inheritors tasked with teaching the next generation.
