Taxi vs ride-hailing rivalry / Hong Kong's first breastmilk bank

2024-05-21
On today's Backchat, we're talking about heightened tensions between ride-hailing providers and taxi drivers.

Cab drivers last week held an "undercover operation" in a move to tackle ride-hailing services, by posing as Uber passengers and calling the police when reaching their destination.

Speaking to RTHK, the chairman of the Hong Kong Taxi and Public Light Bus Association Chow Kwok-keung said that he did not approve of drivers taking the matter into their own hand but called on the authorities to take more stringent action, saying that only 33 prosecutions were launched over unlicensed ride-hailing services last year.

This comes as the government announced an increase of HK$2 dollars in flagfalls, citing rising insurance premium and higher maintenance costs.

Is it time to clamp down on ride-hailing services once and for all? Or should the government create a legal framework to let other players into the market?

After 9:45, we look into Hong Kong's first breastmilk bank which is poised to open next year.
