"Two Sessions" Beijing meeting / Oscar winners

2024-03-12
On Tuesday's Backchat, we're talking about the ‘Two-Sessions’ meeting in Beijing – the annual session of the national legislature and China’s top advisory body.

During the week-long conclave, political leaders agreed to set China's 2024 economic growth at 5 percent, a target expected to align with the nation's 14th Five-Year-Plan. But officials also say hidden risks remain a challenge in the midst of an increased market volatility and geopolitical tensions.

The congress also agreed to lower energy consumption, increase the number of special teams to deal with epidemic outbreaks, and revise the structure of the State Council.

What does the ‘Two Sessions’ tell us about China’s direction for the year ahead? Can the economy grow five percent despite an uncertain geopolitical environment?

After 9:45, it's all about films -- we talk about winners of the latest Oscars.
