Minimum wage increase / Congestion pricing

2025-02-24
On Monday’s Backchat, we’re talking about the minimum wage.

Hong Kong's statutory minimum wage is set to rise from the current HK$40 an hour to HK$42.1. This comes after the Executive Council accepted the recommendation of the Minimum Wage Commission to increase the rate by 5.25 percent.

The new rate is set to take effect on May first pending lawmakers’ approval. The move was welcomed by trade unions, although critics argue that those at the lower echelon of the payroll will still struggle to make ends meet.

After 9:30, we look into how cities around the world implement congestion pricing, after US President Donald Trump vowed to put an end to the practice.
