The release of Chinese artificial intelligence app DeepSeek has sent shock waves throughout Silicon Valley, after surpassing ChatGPT in US app downloads. President Donald Trump called the new app a "wake-up call" for US tech giants, which remain in a tight race against their Chinese rivals.


Developers claim the AI model only took two months to come into operation, and cost under US$6 billion to build — significantly less than ChatGPT.


And in yet another possible breakthrough, Chinese owned tech firm Alibaba launched an enhanced version of its Qwen artificial intelligence model, which could well surpass DeepSeek.
