MTR's escalator safety campaign / Launch of electric ferries / Interview with EOC Chairperson
2024-11-14
On Thursday’s Backchat, we’re talking about a new MTR safety campaign to discourage commuters from walking on escalators.
Citing over 400 escalator related accidents in the first nine months of this year, the MTR Corporation is deploying staff on both sides of some escalators to stop passengers walking up or down.
The corporation has promised not to invoke its by-laws, which allow fines of up to $5,000 for “improper use” of escalators. But some netizens are still angry, saying the campaign is unnecessary and the MTR should focus on improving its lifts instead.
So what do you make of this move? Is it sensible? Or exaggerated?
After 9:30, we talk about a pilot scheme promoting the trial of electric ferries in Hong Kong.
And after 9:45, we discuss with the Equal Opportunities Commission about some NGOs calls to give the body more power.

9:05am-9:30am: Alok Jain, CEO and Managing Director of Trans Consult
