Octopus JoyYou card discounts / Australia's "right to disconnect" law

2024-08-28
On Wednesday's Backchat, we're talking about a special promotion involving the personalised JoyYou Octopus card, aimed at encouraging activity for the elderly and boosting local spending.

For a two-week period starting from Wednesday, card holders will receive an $8 reward for every $100 spent with participating businesses -- with a maximum rebate amount capped at $800 per user.

Starting from last Sunday, residents aged 60 or over now need to use a JoyYou card in in order to benefit from $2 public transport concessionary fares. The change was introduced to tackle fraudulent
use of anonymous cards by non-eligible travellers.

So will this promotion encourage older people to go out and about more frequently? And will it help to boost consumption?

After 9:45, we'll learn more about Australia's new "right to disconnect law", for employees when they're off duty. It's similar to laws in some parts of Europe and Latin America. But could such a concept ever take hold here?
