White Elephant Projects and Infrastructure Spending / Fireworms found on the beach 00:59:00 2018-06-22
On Friday's Backchat, we're talking about white elephant projects and infrastructure spending. The Government is predicting fewer people than originally planned will use the new HK-Zhuhai Macao bridge, while a video on application procedures is not exactly user-friendly. Will the bridge end up as a spectacular but useless stunt, or actually make economic sense? What about other major projects like the XRL, the Cruise Terminal, Disneyland and even the planned footbridge in Yuen Long that costs $1.8 billion? Should the government be more cautious? Or are they good bets for the long term, with many hidden benefits to the smooth running of our city? What is the role of the Capital Works Development Fund in all this? After 9.20, fireworms found on beaches - what on earth are they and how scared should we be?
