On Tuesday's Backchat: Biodiversity and environmental protection.

President Xi Jinping is due to give a speech today via video link to a United Nations conference being co-ordinated from Kunming, in the mainland. It’s part of a process which is aimed at drawing up a new global conservation treaty by next year.

The head of the UN convention on Biological Protection has said the world has reached “a moment of truth” in terms of protecting ecosystems.

Meanwhile in Hong Kong, the Environment Secretary, Wong Kam-sing, has said the Northern Metropolis development plan announced in last week’s policy address will be what he called a “carbon-neutral community”, development would be “sustainable” and important habitats would be protected.

He also repeated the pledge that Hong Kong would aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, and would spend HK$240 billion over two decades to combat climate change.
