 Activity at China’s factories improved in July for a fifth straight month. The official manufacturing PMI unexpectedly climbed to 51.1 from June’s reading of 50.9. The services PMI dropped to 54.2 from 54.4 in June, but was still above 50, which indicates an expansion in the sector.

The better than expected activity on the mainland was mirrored by upbeat readings from Asia’s other key exporting nations. Factory production in South Korea jumped at the fastest rate in more than 11 years, and Japan's output snapped four months of decline.


President Trump told reporters on Friday that he will sign an Executive Order banning Chinese owned video app TikTok from operating in the USA. ByteDance has offered to sell the app's US operations with reports suggesting that Microsoft is in advanced talks to buy TikTok. Yesterday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the Trump administration will announce measures shortly against “a broad array” of Chinese-owned software deemed to pose national-security risks.
