The Wall Street Journal is reporting that President Xi Jinping plans to present President Trump with a set of terms the US needs to meet before China is ready to settle its long-running trade dispute. Among the preconditions, according to Chinese officials with knowledge of the plan, Beijing is insisting that the Trump Administration remove its ban on the sale of US technology to Huawei. Yesterday, The South China Morning Post reported that President Trump will announce a delay in new tariffs with sources saying it was the price to be paid for Xi Jinping agreeing to hold a bilateral meeting with him on Saturday.

President Trump has called on India to withdraw tariffs on US goods. The Indian government said it would impose tariffs on 28 US products in response to Washington's refusal to exempt Delhi from higher taxes on steel and aluminium imports.

The latest data from the mainland shows the slide in China’s industrial profits slowing. They rose 1.1% y/y in May, compared to a 3.7% fall in April.

Our guests on today’s Money Talk are Hao Hong of Bocom International and Samuel Faveur at Mandarin Capital. Providing the view from Australia is Toby Lawson from Societe Generale Australia.
