Is Hong Kong water resilient? / Leo Messi's no-show: updates on surging consumer complaints

2024-02-07

On Wednesday's Backchat, we're talking about Hong Kong's water supplies, after the city recently activated a new desalination plant.

Located at Tseung Kwan O, the facility is meeting about five percent of the SAR's demand for fresh water, and that will increase to 10 percent once a second phase is operational.

The opening of the new plant comes after Hong Kong officials signed a new three-year water supply agreement with Guangdong in December. The Secretary for Development, Bernadette Lin, has said that desalination is important to the territory's water security, adding that climate change could affect existing reserves such as Dongjiang river, which supplies about 70 percent of Hong Kong's water.

However, the minister said that desalination would not replace the city’s main water sources, citing high consumption and heavy operating costs.

So how water resilient are we? Are there alternative means of supply that could be explored? We'll ask the experts.

After 9:40, we'll get the latest from the Consumer Council -- which has seen a surge in complaints from football fans seeking to get their money back over the Lionel Messi no-show controversy.
