In our main topic today, we’ll be looking at the Hong Kong government’s decision to sever ties with Hong Kong’s largest teaching union hours after Xinhua and the People’s Daily branded it as a “malignant tumor” that must be eradicated.
Chief Executive Carrie Lam accused the Professional Teachers’ Union of “hijacking” the education sector and leaving people with negative views of the city’s teachers. While Lau Siu-kai, an adviser to Beijing, said the action was part of a new phase of corrective measures against educational, cultural and media organisations in Hong Kong.
So is this the first step towards the government taking action against other Hong Kong groups which have been criticized by Beijing such as the Hong Kong Bar and Journalists Associations? And what should we make of former Backchat co-host Steve Vine’s sudden departure from Hong Kong due to what he said was a series of “alarming events, both personal and political”.
Later in the show, what impact will the government’s latest Covid measures have on the severe shortage of foreign domestic helpers?
