Journey to the Math Kingdom
Award:
Chief Executive’s Award for Teaching Excellence (2015/2016)
Mathematics Education Key Learning Area
School: Ng Wah Catholic Primary School
Awardees: Cherk Fung-ngan, Lau Hiu-yam, Chan Ka-yiu, Wong Man-leung

To make their students fall in love with Math, the teachers of this school have banded together to rack their brains and come up with a series of extremely creative teaching materials. Through active learning, they have made mathematics visible, audible, and tangible, so as to enable the students to retain what they have learned.

Ms. Cherk Fung-ngan, the Head of Math, regularly meets with teachers who teach the same grade level at “joint class planning sessions” to discuss the learning difficulties their students are having. They then formulate solutions to address these problems and devise diversified teaching strategies and learning activities to boost their students’ interest in math. Ms. Lau Hiu-yam, who is full of imaginative ideas, can be considered the creative director of the Math Department. She always creates games that are relevant to the topics being taught, enabling students to subconsciously learn math-related knowledge through play. Even though the teaching materials need to be prepared from scratch, Ms. Lau is more than happy to take on all the tasks involved, from design and illustration to printing. She skilfully infuses math knowledge into the games, enabling students to overcome their fear of math and learn while having fun.

The math teachers of this school began producing their own educational television programmes six years ago. Mr. Chan Ka-yiu and Mr. Wong Man-leung even made their acting debuts as the God of Math and King of Math respectively to teach mathematics using a humorous approach. It became a huge hit with the students. These educational videos featuring eventful plots, animations, and pop songs gradually gave rise to the “Math Kingdom”. The teachers play pivotal roles in the kingdom, while the students are the realm’s subjects. This new identity motivates the students to enthusiastically participate in every activity held in math class.
