Disappearing Totems

2015-04-27
The Tsou, who mainly live in Alishan, Central Taiwan, is a group of indigenous people with second smallest size of population. The Laiji group is one of the branch of the Tsou. It is said that because of hunting boars, ancestor of the Tsou discovered this piece of beautiful land and hence settled in there with their family, so boar has become the totem of the Laiji group. While the localization by Han people and youngsters moving out lead to an endangered Tsou’s culture, some people choose to come back to nature. They create boar-themed products and pick up video camera to document the real life of the Tsou.
