Operation Santa Claus 2008 won a stunning success despite economic setbacks. This year, HK$11,002,664 was raised for 13 beneficiaries. Hats off to those who made it happen!
A closing ceremony was held in 20 January 2009 at the Apex in Central Plaza in Wanchai to announce the figure and to thank all the supporters.
Permanent Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development (Communications and Technology) Duncan Pescod, Director of Broadcasting Franklin Wong and SCMP Editor CK Lau conjured up the final figure with magician Albert Tam.
Also attending - and performing - were legislative councillors Alan Leong and Ronny Tong, and representatives of corporate donors and beneficiaries.
As this year’s highlight, about HK$2.9 million of the total donations will be given to a reconstruction programme, the “Homes for Hope” project, aiming to rebuild homes for devastated communities across Sichuan Province after last year’s earthquake.
